Disturbing Trend Finds More Maine Kids Getting Sick From Marijuana Edibles
When it comes to marijuana use, everyone knows there are multiple ways to get it into your system. For decades, the go-to form of consumption was smoking. However, in today's world, many people are turning to eating the drug for a multitude of reasons.
According to WEB MD, there are a variety of reasons that a person may choose to use edible THC over other forms of ingestion. For instance, when you eat it, you're not left with the overwhelming scent of marijuana on your clothes or in your home.
In addition to the smell, many people often report long lasting effect of THC when it is consumed. The effects of edibles tend to last longer compared to smoking or vaping, making them a good option for longer relief from certain symptoms.
However, it's paramount the even in edible form, THC be kept away from children. In a report done by WGME 13, their team found that so far in 2024, 50 Maine children have incidentally ingested drugs, the majority of which has been marijuana.
It doesn't help that a lot of the edible THC comes in what looks like kids candy packages. In addition, there has been a recent change in Maine's cannabis law that allowed the removal of the universal symbol from THC gummies.
Jeff Hudak, the director of the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy, told WGME in part, about that particular bill,
"Unfortunately, that bill ultimately became law, which I believe, and I warned the committee would likely result in an increase in accidental ingestions. One of the critiques or the counters to that is that to a two-year-old, a universal symbol doesn't mean anything. That's 100% correct. But the universal does mean something to an adult, or a caretaker who particularly is unfamiliar with the problem,”
