Maine Man Critically Hurt While Trying to Help Teen on I-95
A Maine man is in critical condition after attempting to help a teenage driver during a crash Monday evening on Interstate 95 in Veazie.
According to a press release from Maine State Police, the incident happened around 7:02 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2026, on Interstate 95 northbound near mile marker 189. An 18-year-old woman from Bangor was driving a 2013 Kia Sorento when she lost control due to snowy road conditions. Her vehicle came to rest in the median.
Police say the teen exited her vehicle and moved behind the guardrail for safety. A 54-year-old man from Medford stopped to assist her and joined her behind the guardrail. His wife, who was traveling with him, remained in their vehicle and called 911 while the two stood outside.
While they were waiting, a second vehicle driven by a 19-year-old woman from Old Town lost control in the snowy conditions and struck both pedestrians. Investigators say preliminary information suggests the Medford man may have attempted to shield the 18-year-old driver at the time of the crash.
Both individuals were thrown down an embankment.
The 18-year-old sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The 54-year-old man suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition.
The 19-year-old driver who struck them also sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
Authorities say speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation by Maine State Police.
