Maine Man Crashes into Police Cruiser While Driving The Wrong Way, Allegedly Intoxicated
A Maine man is in custody following a police chase that ended in a wrong-way crash.
It was a wild scene that ended in a vehicle crashing into a police cruiser on Sunday night in the town of Westbrook.
WGME 13 is reporting that Westbrook Police got multiple reports of someone driving erratically on Stroudwater Street at about 8:25 on Sunday evening. Reports indicated that the driver was heading in the direction of William Clarke Drive.
By the time responding officers got to the area, they say the driver was spotted driving the incorrect direction down William Clarke Drive. Police say the vehicle appeared to be heading right towards them.
WGME reports that police then immediately activated the emergency lights on their vehicles, however the driver still failed to stop and crashed into them head-on.
Fortunately, the 'push bumper', typically reserved for performing a PIT maneuver, was able to absorb the impact of the collision and, as a result, no officers were injured during the crash.
Westbrook Police were then able to get the driver out of the car and identify him as, Matthew McGovern, 45 of Westbrook.
In addition to the obvious charge of driving to endanger, McGovern was also charged with operating under the influence, reckless conduct, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and criminal mischief.
McGovern was subsequently transported to the Cumberland County Jail the story reported.
Westbrook Police told the news station that they made a total of four operating under the influence arrests in the city over the weekend, including the one McGovern was involved in.
This is a developing story that we will keep updated as information is made available to us.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
