Parts of Maine, New Hampshire to Get 16″ of Snow in Weekend Storm
Well, if you're one of the thousands of Mainers that has been waiting for 'the big one' to come along and bury the state in cold, fresh snow, well here it is.
However, before we dive into the snowfall forecast and the timing of the storm, we should first mention the bitter wind chills that will be ravaging the region during the day on Friday.
According to WGME 13, the wind chill values will plummet heading into the afternoon on Friday as blustery winds move in prior to the weekend's big storm. Make sure if you have to go outside you bundle up, it doesn't take long for frost bite to set in given the conditions.
The storm itself is going to move in late Friday night and stay with us through the early hours of Monday morning. Below is a clip of the radar at 1am Sunday morning from WGME 13. This shows the rain/snow/ice lines as the storm moves in.
By 8am on Sunday morning, the snow is widespread across Central and Southern portions of Maine and pretty much all of New Hampshire.
As the day goes on, the precipitation eventually engulfs all of Maine from Kittery to Fort Kent.
By 130pm, the snow is coming down at a rapid rate across the state. Driving and/or travelling will be greatly hindered by the snow which could be coming down at rates close to 2" per hour in parts of the state.
Staying home, unless you absolutely have to go out, is advised. Give the plows and first responders the space they need to get the job done. Basically, you should go get your bread and milk before Sunday.
By Sunday evening at 9pm, the storm is continuing to rage on across most of Maine and New Hampshire.
As we move into the nighttime hours, however, there a more defined line of sleet and freezing rain that makes its way to the immediate coastline. This could further impact travel during the overnight hours.
As the storm eventuall moves out on Monday morning, everyone is going to have a mess to clean up across the New England region. Fortunately, Monday is a holiday and the start of February break.
Western and northern sections will end up with 10-16" of now while Central and Southern sections could see close to 10" by the time it's all over.
Calmer weather returns for the week ahead, but don't worry about losing any of this new snow because it is going to get COLD!
