Major Upgrades Coming to Popular Central Maine Recreation Area
We're lucky in Maine to have a plethora of outdoor recreation areas to enjoy during all four, or five depending on who you ask, of Maine's seasons.
Whether you live in the tourist-driven areas of Southern Maine, the rocky coast, the western mountains or right here in Central Maine, there is no shortage of recreational areas that are worth a few hours or an all day adventure.
One of the most popular areas that we have here in Central Maine is the Quarry Road Recreation Area just off North Street in Waterville. This area is home to dozens of activities throughout the year, not the least of which is epic wintertime cross country skiing.
And now, according to the Kennebec Journal, the QRRA is going to be getting a major facelift.
The newspaper goes on to explain in its article that, beginning next year, several improvement projects will commence that include paving some of the dirt road and parking area and updating the meadow portion of the recreation area so that it may be used all year long.
Additionally, the paper explains that funding has been made available for a "seasonal development coach" for the upcoming ski season. This position will be responsible for helping to grow the area's youth ski program. A position salary of up to $34,155 has been made available through donor funding, the KJ reports.
Matt Skehan, director of Waterville's Parks & Recreation, said in the article part about the upcoming improvements to the Quarry Road Recreation Area:
“We’re hopeful and optimistic that we can illustrate to the funder that it’s a very valuable position in that it may help develop programs and revenues that could ultimately help fund the position without private money. That’s the goal. We’d like to host events in February and March — large-scale Nordic ski events that draw hundreds of athletes and families.”
