Maine State Police are warning about a scam that is targeting registered sex offenders across the state.

According to authorities, officials who oversee the Maine Sex Offender Registry were recently alerted to letters being sent to individuals on the registry, particularly those currently on probation. The letters reportedly ask recipients to email personal and sensitive information.

Police say the letters are not legitimate.

Authorities emphasized that neither the Maine Sex Offender Registry nor the Maine Department of Corrections would ever send a letter requesting sensitive personal information through email in this way.

Officials are urging anyone who receives one of these letters not to respond or send any personal information. Instead, recipients should report the letter directly to the Maine Sex Offender Registry or contact local law enforcement.

Anyone who believes they may have received one of these scam letters is encouraged to contact the Maine Sex Offender Registry at 207-624-7270.

Police say reporting these scams can help prevent others from becoming victims and assist investigators in tracking down those responsible.
