A Maine State Police K-9 who was killed in the line of duty is being honored in Washington, D.C. today during a national tribute ceremony recognizing fallen police dogs from across the country.

K-9 Preacher, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois, died in February of 2025 after being shot during a standoff in Portage Lake in northern Maine. WGME is reporting that his death deeply impacted law enforcement officers across the state and many Mainers who followed the story.

Today’s ceremony will honor 23 K-9s from around the country who lost their lives while serving alongside their handlers. Preacher’s handler and supporters from Maine are expected to attend the tribute to remember his service, loyalty, and sacrifice.

The event also shines a spotlight on the important role police dogs play in law enforcement every day, from tracking suspects and locating missing people to protecting officers in dangerous situations, the news station reported.

Organizers say the ceremony is meant to ensure the sacrifices made by K-9 teams are never forgotten. They’ve also partnered with Nine Line Apparel on a fundraising effort that will help support future memorial tributes and K-9 teams nationwide.

Right on the border of Northern Maine and Southwestern New Brunswick, Canada lies a unique plot of land.

The Aroostook Valley Country Club is an 18-hole golf course that calls two countries its home. The course and the clubhouse sit in Canada, while the parking lot, pro shop, and entrance lie in Maine.

It's truly an international round of golf at AVCC.
