Snow, Wind, Rain, Flooding & Power Outages Likely to Hit Maine Over The Weekend
It is just me, or has this been the least wintery winter in recent history here in the Pine Tree State?
We've barely seen any snow, at least in the Central region of the state, but amount of wind and rain we've seen over the last several months has been pretty wild. And now, it looks like more of that, plus some snow, is on the way for the upcoming weekend.
In addition to having to remember to change the clocks ahead on your stove and microwave this coming Sunday, it looks like most Mainers will need to contend with a pretty nasty storm that's currently headed our way.
According to a weather blog from WGME 13, a 'potent' storm, driven by a slew of low pressure, will move into the state Saturday night into Sunday. And with it will come areas of heavy rain, snow, wind and the possibility for localized flooding.
While much of Central Maine can expect to see mostly rain, there is the possibility of a good amount of snow falling to the west. This could be welcome news for the ski resorts as the chance of half a foot of snow could greatly improve their spring skiing season.
As far as the wind goes, Central Maine will see gusts into the lower 40s. Typically, that's not crazy enough to cause concern for power outages, but you have to remember that the ground is thawing rapidly and will be saturated following all of this rain. That means there's increased likelihood for trees to uproot in the wind and fall across utility wires.
As far as localized flooding, the greatest risk for that remains in coastal Maine. Weather will begin to ease up and become more mild and much drier as we head into Sunday afternoon and into the work week.
