Happy Birthday, Maine!  Sunday, March 15, marks 195 years since Maine became an independent state in 1820. Before that, Maine was part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Maine entered the union as part an agreement designed to maintain the political balance between pro-and-anti-slavery states.

March is typically the start of the pothole season, and road crews for the state and municipalities have begun temporarily patching holes when they can and posting weight limits on rural roads to prevent further damage.
