Leon Gorman, a grandson of L.L. Bean founder Leon Leonwood Bean, died Thursday (Sept. 3) in his Yarmouth, Maine home. He died from cancer. Gorman was 80.

Leon Gorman transformed L.L. Bean into a globally known supplier of outdoor gear and apparel and was widely known in Maine for his philanthropic work and community involvement.

According to a company press release, "in Gorman’s 30 years as company president, beginning in 1967, he led L.L. Bean from a $4.75 million catalog company to a multi-faceted enterprise of more than $1 billion."
