NBC Giving Jessica Simpson an Autobiographical Sitcom?

While NBC has mostly struggled in the comedy department over the last few years, such critical gems as ‘Community,’ ‘30 Rock,’ ‘Parks and Recreation‘ and even ‘The Office‘ failing to bring in the big ratings, the network’s recent success in the last year may lead them to some bolder choices. To that end, the peacock has decided to extend its relationship with ‘Fashion Star’ judge Jessica Simpson, affording the singer her own semi-autobiographical sitcom in the near future. But how true to life would a Jessica Simpson sitcom be?

NBC may have some holes to fill in its comedy lineup in the near future, and singer Jessica Simpson may be the one they hope to fill it. The network has begun development of an as-yet-untitled sitcom featuring Simpson, to be somewhat autobiographical of the singer’s daily life, in a pilot developed by Robin and Nick Bakay (‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop). Yeah, seriously.

“We are thrilled to team up with the multi-talented Jessica Simpson to bring this new sitcom to life on NBC as she is truly a modern-day Lucy with incredible comedic chops,” series producer Electus chairman Ben Silverman says. “From running a fashion empire to wrangling her public image as a new mom, we see Jessica’s character approach a variety of ‘everyday’ circumstances that will get audiences laughing out loud.”

Simpson too commented on the announcement, saying, “I am so excited to work with Ben and NBC again, this time on a scripted comedy. I often find myself thinking that no one could ever make up the things that actually happen in my life — so between the real-life elements and a great team of writers, I think we’ll have people laughing!”

The effort marks Simpson’s second attempt at scripted comedy following 2004 ABC pilot ‘Jessica,’ but what say you? Do you think a Jessica Simpson sitcom would be worth watching?
