Because it made total sense, Taylor Swift kicked off the showy, celebratory awards gala that is the 2013 Grammys with a bitter breakup song. Forgive her. At this point in her life, it’s pretty much all she’s got.

Besides, there are so many young guys there tonight that she’s gotta make sure they know she’s on the market.

'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' is peppy and catchy, but not exactly in keeping with the festive theme of the evening. So, to cover the fact that it’s basically a big fat eff-off song, the Grammy producers thought the best call would be to have some strange ‘Alice in Wonderland’ thing happening on the stage around her while she strutted around dressed as Tom Petty and sang flatly. Or lip-synced flatly. Whatever.

If you think about it, the audience is full of people who are used to hallucinating strange things, so the side-show opening song probably didn’t frighten them too much. Most of them – including Whiz Khalifa’s unborn baby – probably thought, “Sweet. My meds are kicking in.”

That being said, T-Swizzle has already won a Grammy today and is nominated in the Record of Year category for her album ‘Red,’ which includes the breakup anthem with which she opened the show. Which shows what we know.
