Many homes in communities across Maine  are getting new smoke detectors. According to centralmaine.com  it is a partnership with the Red Cross and local fire departments that help make it happen. Working smoke detectors with batteries help to saves lives.

Friday's evacuation of the Waterville Wal-Mart was caused by a alarm senor that was broken and not a fire.   According to centrlmaine.com it was around noon time when it happened.

Maine State Police say 5 people were killed in four separate motor vehicle crashes over the weekend. There were others injured in crashes as well in Maine including a firey crash in West Gardiner this weekend. (AP)

Maine's annual hunting seasons for bear, deer and moose are heading into their final two weeks. The seasons draw thousands of hunters from Maine and elsewhere every year. All three end on Nov. 26.

The Girl Scouts of Maine are about to start earning "Sustainable Maine" patches for actions they take to help the planet. The scouts are partnering with Natural Resources Council of Maine on the new patch. The scouts and the council say the patch will be awarded to Girl Scouts who take "personal actions toward a more sustainable future."

Protests against President-elect Donald Trump continue across the country. In Manhattan on Sunday, some 1,000 protesters carried signs in English and Spanish saying things like "Hate won't make us great," and chanted, "We are here to stay." Several hundred protesters marched around Philadelphia's City Hall and then down Market Street to Independence Mall. There were also protests in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Oregon and other locations.

President-elect Donald Trump has made his first two key personnel appointments. He's named GOP chief Reince Priebus as his White House chief of staff and Breitbart news executive Stephen Bannon as chief strategist and senior counselor.

Strong aftershocks continue in New Zealand following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the South Island just after midnight Monday. The quake caused damage in Wellington, the capital, more than 120 miles to the north. It was also strongly felt to the south in the city of Christchurch, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2011 that killed 185 people.

Leon Russell, who performed, sang and produced some of rock 'n' roll's top records, has died at age 74. Russell's wife, Jan Bridges, says her husband died in his sleep Sunday at their Nashville home. She says he had heart bypass surgery in July. Russell recorded hit songs like "Tight Rope" and "Lady Blue" and took part in "The Concert for Bangladesh."

The brightest moon in almost 69 years will be lighting up the sky this week. The phenomenon known as the supermoon will reach its most luminescent in North America before dawn on Monday. It'll reach its zenith in Asia and the South Pacific Monday night. And across the international dateline in New Zealand, it will reach its brightest after midnight on Tuesday local time.
