John Mayer Sidesteps Questions About Taylor Swift + ‘Paper Doll’
Mayer’s answer — or lack thereof — was pretty telling.
Host Willie Geist asked Mayer (via Us Weekly), “There’s been some speculation from the press that it might be about someone. True or false?” (Note how he didn’t mention T-Swizzle by name!)
Still, Mayer’s no dummy. He knew what Geist was getting at, so his verbose non-answer was still an answer. He replied, “Yeah, songwriters write songs because of people, about people. Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don’t get involved with [it]. It’s none of my business.”
That makes almost no sense, so we’re gonna take that to be a “Yes, indeed it is.” Why? Check it out: In ‘Paper Doll,’ Mayer sings, “You’re like twenty-two girls in one / And none of them know what they’re runnin’ from / Was it just too far to fall? / For a little paper doll.”
The song’s rumored to be a response to Swift’s track ‘Dear John,’ in which she sings, “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain.” What’s more, in ‘Paper Doll,’ Mayer promises, “Someone’s gonna paint you another sky.”
Probably not a coincidence, kids!
