37 Must-Visit Attractions and Eateries on Historic Route 1 in Maine

These days, the vast majority of people coming into the state of Maine will do so via the Maine Turnpike / I-95.

It makes sense.  It is the fastest way to get into the state if you are coming from Boston, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, etc.

And, if you are one of those people who uses your GPS to go everywhere, there is a really good chance that is the way it will take you - unless you tell it you do not want to pay tolls.

Unfortunately, when you take I-95 directly to your destination, you miss the opportunity to check out so many cool things that you would see if you used the state's non-highway roads to get to your destination: amusement parks, restaurants, cool shops, and more.

Prior to the creation of the interstate system Route 1 was the main way to travel up and down the east coast.

According to the DOT website, US Route 1 stretches over 2,300 miles between Southern Florida and Northern Maine.  For decades, it was the primary tourist corridor.

Despite the fact that many people are taking I-95 these days, there is still so much to do on Route 1.  Honestly, we are hoping that, the next time you decide to adventure around Maine, you spend some time cruising up and down the coast on Route 1.
