According to WGME 13, a group that hopes to end the sale and distribution of flavored tobacco products. The Flavors Hook Kids coalition, and community members that support them, gathered at the Statehouse Wednesday to voice their concerns to Maine lawmakers.

In the last year, some Maine towns and cities have already banned the sale of flavored tobacco locally, like Bangor and Portland. Advocates, concerned with the high rate of addiction with Maine teens and flavored tobacco, want to see a bill passed that would ban the sale statewide.

A bill was introduced last year to ban the sale, but ultimately stalled. Advocates are hoping to have a new version of that bill to Maine legislators in the next couple of weeks, the article reports.

A senior, Fern Beede, of Mt Ararat High School, told WGME 13,

"It starts with flavors that seem harmless and fun. Like fruit, or like, flavors you might get in a slushie, but that’s exactly what tobacco companies are trying to do, lure us in with flavors. So it doesn't feel like smoking, but then you're hooked, and you can't break the habit."
