The Harold Alfond Foundation (HAF) has decided that ALL babies born as Mainers will now automatically be awarded a $500 Alfond grant for college. Before this point, parents needed to fill out a little paperwork for the NextGen account for the baby to get the grant. Now, every Maine baby is in!

OH, you ask what is the Harold Alfond College Challenge and ‘500 For Baby’?  Since 2009 HAF has funded nearly 23,000 grants, investing almost $11.5 million to benefit Maine’s children. But the HAF has decided for the future workforce of Maine, every baby will get the $500 Alfond Grant, not just the opportunity for the grant . As the HAF said ’Harold Alfond College Challenge opts out of opting in’, the grants will be funded for those kids...automatically.  It gets better! The Alfond Foundation will also fund accounts for Maine resident babies born since January 1, 2013 who are not already enrolled in the program.

This would have been Harold Alfond’s 100th birthday! What a great way to be able to celebrate with a gift to so many babies and their future in Maine.
