This Asian-Inspired Restaurant Brings Flavorful Bao Buns and Korean Corn Dogs To Augusta, Maine
What began in 2020 as a small food truck traveling around Central Maine has grown into one of Augusta’s most talked-about dining spots.
Bao & Beyond, located at 1 Hichborn Street in Augusta, opened its permanent restaurant in late 2025 after spending five years building a loyal following at fairs, breweries, and community events throughout the state.
According to Central Maine, the restaurant is owned by husband-and-wife team Trevor Charette and Pear Nalaphas. Charette worked in kitchens across Central Maine for years, while Nalaphas grew up helping at her grandfather’s Taiwanese restaurant. Together, they created a menu inspired by Taiwanese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese flavors.
What is Bao and Beyond Known For?
Bao & Beyond is best known for its signature bao buns: soft, steamed buns folded taco-style and packed with flavorful fillings. Current favorites include the crispy chicken bao, bulgogi beef bao, and Nalaphas’ tofu karaage bao, topped with pickled cabbage, cucumber, and spicy mayo.
Other standout menu items include Korean corn dogs, cold soba salad, togarashi fries, loaded bulgogi fries, tempura cauliflower, and a popular crispy chicken pad Thai special.
