BE AWARE: New Scammers Pretending to be Augusta, Maine Police Department
As I was perusing Facebook this morning I noticed something pretty interesting. It was a scam alert from the Augusta Maine Police Department. Now, it's not super-uncommon for the police department to be warning the community of scams, however, it IS uncommon for them to warn of scams involving their own department.
The post on the Augusta Police Facebook page indicates that they received a call from a concerned citizen Wednesday morning in regards to a suspicious text message.
The caller told police that someone had sent them a text message claiming that they were with the Augusta Maine Police Department. At that point, the apparent scammer asked the person to click on a link that sent that would reduce 20% of their fine.
Augusta police are alerting citizens NOT to respond to any such texts if they happen to be sent to you. The police department isn't in the business of sending coupons to reduce fine amounts.
If you receive any such text, you should contact the Augusta Police Department by calling them at 207.626.2370
