One Dead Following Fiery Sunday Crash on Maine’s Interstate 295
Maine State Police are investigating a deadly crash that happened Sunday afternoon on Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham.
According to officials, the incident happened around 4:06 p.m. on August 10 near mile marker 37 southbound. Multiple 911 callers reported seeing flames in the median, prompting a rapid response from fire and rescue crews.
When first responders arrived, they discovered a vehicle off the roadway in the grassy median, already engulfed in flames. Investigators say the car, driven by an adult man, had been traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it left the road, struck several trees, and caught fire.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle and did not survive the crash. His name is being withheld until his family can be notified.
No other vehicles were involved, and there were no additional injuries. Traffic in the area was slowed for an extended period as crews worked to extinguish the fire and begin their investigation.
Authorities say the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the vehicle before it left the road, or saw the crash happen, is urged to contact the Maine State Police at 207-624-7076.
This marks another serious incident on Maine highways during what’s been a busy summer travel season. Police are reminding drivers to obey speed limits, stay focused, and use extra caution, especially on high-speed roadways like I-295.
