Citizen’s Petition Calling to Limit Number of Cruise Ship Passengers Allowed to Get Off Ship in Bar Harbor Each Day
At first, there was an attempt in the Maine city of Bar Harbor to limit the total number of ships permitted to call on the port each year. Now it appears that a group of citizens in the same town is seeking to literally limit the number of passengers that get off the ship each day.
According to WGME 13, the citizen petition states that the city would limit the number of cruise ship passengers allowed to disembark into the city each day to no more than 1,000.
The people that started up this petition tell reporters that the city is "overwhelmed" by the number of cruise ships that call on the popular Maine port every year.
However there is also a group of people that are against this new petition. Many in Bar Harbor say that the limiting of passengers off the ship would adversely affect the local economy and it's revenue generated from tourism.
As of right now, the petition and proposal will not have an affect on the number of passengers allowed to disembark in the 2022 cruise ship season. However, the Bar Harbor Town Council will soon decide if the proposed measure will be added to the November ballot.
If it is added, and pending it passes, Bar Harbor could see limits on the number of people allowed off of its visiting cruise ships as soon as spring of 2023.
We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
