Major Reconstruction Project to Begin at Portland, Maine’s Congress Square
A major road and sidewalk improvement project is about to get underway at one of Portland’s busiest intersections.
Portland Public Works says construction at Congress Square, where Congress and High Streets meet, will begin at the end of the month. Work is scheduled to start next week and is expected to continue into the spring if it cannot be completed before winter.
WGME reports that the project includes resurfacing the intersection, upgrading sidewalks, installing new traffic signals, and adding better lighting and landscaping. City officials say accessibility upgrades will also play a big role, making it easier for people with mobility challenges to navigate the area.
While the work is expected to significantly improve the square, drivers should prepare for traffic delays. The news station indicated that some sections of Congress and High Streets will be reduced to a single lane during construction. Public Works says crews will work to limit disruption as much as possible for pedestrians and nearby businesses.
Accessibility advocates say these changes are overdue, noting that uneven sidewalks, cobblestones and steep slopes downtown can be difficult for people using wheelchairs or strollers. The upgrades are intended to create safer, smoother walkways while maintaining the historic character of the area, WGME said.
City officials are asking residents and visitors to be patient during the work, emphasizing that the end result will be a more accessible and welcoming downtown space.
