Falling Tree Limb Kills Driver During Severe Maine Storms

A driver was killed Thursday afternoon after a large tree limb crashed through a vehicle during severe storms in Penobscot County.

The fatal incident happened around 1 p.m. on Route 15 in Corinth as strong thunderstorms moved across parts of Maine, WGME reported.

Police said several tree limbs fell onto the moving vehicle. One of the branches pierced the windshield and struck the driver, who died at the scene.

Two children were also inside the vehicle at the time. Both suffered minor injuries and were treated following the crash.

Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton said the vehicle continued traveling northbound after the driver was struck.

According to WGME, another motorist witnessed what happened, realized the people inside the vehicle were in danger and managed to stop the car before it continued farther down the road.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, and a section of Route 15 was affected while first responders investigated and cleared debris from the roadway.

The news station reported that the incident happened during a round of severe weather that brought strong winds, heavy rain and downed trees to several communities across Maine.

Officials have not released the name of the driver.
