Police in Dexter say a local father is in custody after his 7-month-old baby was hospitalized with serious injuries.

WGME is reporting that it started on August 7, when officers got a report about suspected abuse involving the infant. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. While the injuries were serious, police have not released specific details about the child’s condition.

After several days of investigation, police arrested 23-year-old Kolby Drake of Dexter on Wednesday. He’s now facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, assault, and domestic violence assault. Drake was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, WGME reported.

Investigators say this appears to be an isolated incident and that there’s no ongoing risk to the public.

The Dexter Police Department is still gathering information and is asking anyone with tips to call (207) 973-3700 ext. 9 and ask for Detective Dana Austin.

Cases like this are always difficult for small communities, but police say they’re committed to making sure the child is safe and the investigation is thorough.
