A fatal house fire in Skowhegan is under investigation after emergency crews responded to a home on Waye Street Tuesday evening.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, the Skowhegan Fire Department was called to 31 Waye Street at approximately 5:02 p.m. on April 28 for a report of a structure fire with possible entrapment. Multiple agencies responded to assist.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy fire conditions and immediately began efforts to locate and rescue anyone inside. Despite those efforts, an adult was later found deceased within the residence.

The Maine Office of State Fire Marshal has been notified and responded to the scene to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to remain on scene through the night and likely into Wednesday as they work to determine what led to the blaze.

Officials say the deceased individual will be transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification.

At this time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities have not released the identity of the victim. No additional information has been made available as the investigation continues.

Authorities are asking anyone with information that could assist investigators to contact the Office of State Fire Marshal.
