Consumer-level fireworks were made legal in Maine about ten years ago, but there could be some changes or maybe even a repeal because of some concerns and problems.

Maine lawmakers are looking to wrap up their session and have postponed a decision on possible changes to the fireworks laws until they meet again. The concerns and complaints with fireworks reportedly escalated last year with many people looking for SOMETHING fun to do.

The concerns seem to center on the noise affecting the neighbors who are trying to sleep, enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, or neighbors who are veterans with possible PTSD, and the neighbors' animals and pets.

Those who support the possible changes and those who are very against it say Mainers will just buy them out of state.

The changes that have been suggested of selling them only around holidays or special event times or requiring a person to get a burn permit if they are planning on setting off fireworks. Some would like to see Maine go back to a ban on the sale of fireworks altogether.

It was 2012 when Maine legalized fireworks, but communities were free to make their own rules. According to the Sun Journal, 50 communities have some restrictions, and 20 restricted them entirely. Those supporting banning statewide again say no one pays attention to the rules anyway.

When lawmakers get back to this issue, there will be much to discuss to try and find some middle ground for Mainers with the noise concerns, business owners that sell fireworks, and those who enjoy shooting off fireworks.
