[UPDATE] Former U-Maine Football Player, KC Cheif Jovan Belcher, Allegedly Shoots Girlfriend then Kills Himself

A tragedy involving a former U-Maine Black Bear and current Kansas City Chiefs linebacker, Jovan Belcher. Reports are that he allegedly killed his girlfriend, then drove to the Chiefs practice facility and killed himself.

According to KCTV-5 in Kansas City, the player shot and killed his girlfriend at a house near the team's facility Saturday morning and and then drove to the team's main campus and took his own life. Members of the team's staff tried to stop him from committing any other acts of violence before the player turned a gun on himself.

The Kansas City Star says KC Police Capt. David Lindaman said Belcher, and his girlfriend got into an argument around 7 a.m. at their home in Kansas City. Around 7:50 a.m., Lindaman said, Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The NFL Network reported that the mother of the murdered woman called police and told them that her daughter had been shot. Police arrived at the Chiefs' facility only to find the player in question in the parking lot with a gun to his head.

In a statement released by the team, chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said, "The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted."

The statement also acknowledges that the team and organization will fully cooperate with authorities, as well as ensuring "the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members" who need it.

Jovan Belcher, 25, was an undrafted free agent in 2009 and spent all four seasons of his career with the Chiefs. At the University of Maine he played defensive end during his junior and senior years, after switching to the position from outside linebacker where he played as sophomore and freshman.

According to WABI-TV, UMaine Head Football Coach Jack Cosgrove says Jovan was a “tremendous student-athlete.” “His move to the NFL was in keeping with his dreams,” says Cosgrove. “This is an indescribably horrible tragedy. At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Jovan, Kasandra and their families.”
