Turner Man Will Plead “Not Criminally Responsible” for Fatal Stabbing
According to WGME, Troy and Dulsie Varney were landlords to Patrick Maher, who was living in an apartment building a quarter mile from the Varney's house. The article reports that the police believe Patrick broke into the Varney's house through the window while they were sleeping soundly in their bedroom. He then proceeded to enter the bedroom and brutally stabbed them to death. It also states that there was evidence the Mr. Varney did try to fight back.
Sadly, the Varney's daughter and boyfriend were upstairs, heard the screaming and what they saw was a nightmare for any child to see. Their daughter witnessed both of her parents being stabbed, while Maher was on top of them.
The Varney's later passed away in the hospital.
Now comes the justice. What is going to happen to this person who dared to take 2 lives away from this earth? Apparently, Maher is planning on pleading, "not criminally responsible." His day in court will be Tuesday at the Androscoggin Superior Court in Auburn.
What is "not criminally responsible mean?" Well, according to Steps to Justice, not criminally responsible means, "you committed a crime, but because of your mental disorder you are not responsible for what you did. You are NCR if you mental disorder stopped you from understanding what you did or the difference between right and wrong."
In a simple way of saying it, allegedly, he is claiming insanity.
All I hope for is that the two daughters that were left behind are okay. I pray that they find peace, solace, and comfort trying to find a way to navigate through their journey of grief.
We will watch this story closely and update when able.
