Serious Sexual Assault Charges Levied Against Former Maine Cop
A former Maine police officer is facing new charges after previous charges for the same alleged misconduct were dropped earlier this week.
According to an article published by WGME 13, prosecutors who had originally charged a former Maine police officer with sexual assault of a minor, say that as the case was preparing to go to trial, they discovered the victim was actually younger than they originally thought.
Prosecutors now say that 73-year-old Andrew Belisle, a former Kennebunk police officer who previously retired 5 years ago, sexually abused the victim multiple times in 2019 all while she was under 14 years of age.
Prosecutors have since dropped the original charges and have now charged the man with more serious crimes including gross sexual assault. This undoubtedly will change the expected timeline of the original trial and could also change the potential sentencing factors is Belisle is found guilty of the counts against him.
This has been an ongoing case since 2022 when the original charges were filed. As this has now changed the trajectory of the entire case, we will continue to follow this story and will provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the timeline of the upcoming trial.
It's important to note that all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
