Founded in Maine in 1975, Olympia Sports Will Be Closing For Good
In a world where millions of people are constantly turning to massive online retailers for all of their purchasing needs, we continue to see the decline of traditional brick-and-mortar stores, not just in Maine, but all over the United States.
According to WGME 13, the latest store to announce a full closure of all its locations is the Maine-based sporting goods company, Olympia Sports.
WGME reports that Olympia sports, which currently operates 35 stores nationally, will close them all sometime in September. The store shuttered 76 stores back in 2019 and that closure saw eight in Maine close down.
Founded by Portland, Maine native, Edward Manganello, WGME says that the very first Olympia Sports store, which eventually grew to a hefty franchise, opened at the Maine Mall back in 1975. And now, with only 35 stores remaining, will shut them all down for good after a 47 year run.
The news station reported that many of the remaining stores have already begun their going-out-of-business liquidation-style sales events.
According to Google listings, of the 35 remaining Olympia Sports stores, seven of them are in the state of Maine. Those locations include, South Portland, Rockland, Ellsworth, Auburn, Waterville, Windham and Falmouth. And, by the end of September 2022, those storefronts will be completely empty.
