If your kids have ever talked about wanting to try hockey, but you have been hesitant to make the jump because of the cost of equipment or simply not knowing where to start, an upcoming event in Hallowell could be the perfect opportunity.

The SAM Jr Terriers are hosting their second Try Hockey for Free and Try Goalie for Free event on Saturday, August 22, at the Thomas College Ice Vault in Hallowell.

Organizers say their first free hockey event was a huge success, and they are hoping to welcome even more new players this time around.

The event is open to all ages and is designed for people who may have never stepped onto the ice before, as well as those who have been considering giving hockey a try.

Skaters will take the ice beginning at 11 a.m., while the goalie session is scheduled for 12:10 p.m.

The Thomas College Ice Vault is located at 203 Whitten Road in Hallowell.

Participants are encouraged to bring any hockey gear they already have. Those who need equipment are asked to arrive about 45 minutes early so organizers have enough time to properly fit them before they head onto the ice.

For families who have always wondered whether hockey might be a good fit, this is a pretty easy way to find out without immediately committing to a full season or purchasing a bunch of gear.

Registration is available through the QR code on the event flyer. Anyone with questions can also contact the SAM Jr Terriers by email at samhockeyvicechair@gmail.com or through the organization's Facebook page.

With Maine's long winters and strong hockey culture, this could be a great chance for a future player or goalie to discover a brand new sport.
