Anyone who listens to me or follows my Facebook page knows that I am probably the biggest proponent of firearms for self-defense in Maine radio. This story is a good example of why.

About a week ago in Portland, a woman was approached by a man with a knife as she walked to her car on Gilman Street, near Maine Medical Center.

The man threatened her and asked for money. She said she didn't have any and got into her car where she had a gun which she pulled on the man, telling him to leave her alone.

The man fled. The woman drove away and called police.

The suspect is described as a black man, 20-30 years old, about 5'9" with a goatee and a buzz cut. Anyone with information should call the Portland Police at 874-8575.

My thought is: It's better to have a gun and not need it than need one and not have it.
