Some Maine Hannaford Customer’s & Employee’s Information Breached

Some unsettling news for customers (and even employees) of Maine Hannaford locations. Turns out there was a bit of a data breach last November and we're just now getting some of the details.

According to an article published in the Kennebec Journal, the supermarket’s parent company, Ahold Delhaize (they also own Stop & Shop, Food Lion, and Giant), says personal info from both customers and current or former employees was compromised during a cyberattack that happened last November.

What sorts of information were compromised in the breach?

We're talking Social Security numbers, driver’s license info, home addresses, phone numbers, and even some health details. What was exposed varies from person to person, according to a statement the company just released Thursday.

If you remember that weird outage Hannaford stores across Maine experienced in November where you couldn’t use your credit card or place to-go orders online, this is what it was all tied to.

When did the company realize something nefarious was going on?

The KJ explained that the breach was first detected on November 6, when the company discovered that someone managed to get into one of their internal U.S. file systems. Credit card processing came back online relatively quickly at most locations, but online pharmacy services and phone orders took a lot longer to recover.

Hannaford seemed to take a bit more time to bounce back compared to some of the other store brands in the Ahold family. Right now, according to the KJ, there’s no mention of how many people were affected, but if you think you might be one of them, either as a customer or past employee, keep an eye on your accounts and credit reports.
