Have You Seen These On The Streets Of Your Maine Town?

One of the things I love most about living in-town in Augusta is how walkable the city is. Within a few minutes' walk of both the station and my home, I can get my Dunkin', a pizza, a craft beer (or something stronger), some amazing Chinese food, and more.

And, now that the weather is warmer and the snow is melting, I have been pushing myself to walk more.

A few days ago, I was taking a walk through some of the residential neighborhoods of Augusta. As I walked along State Street, something caught my eye. It was these little plastic buckets attached to a sign post adjacent to one of the frequently busy street's crosswalks.

What are they for?

These little plastic buckets are intended to hold small bright orange flags. Much like something a school zone crossing guard would use, these flags are meant to be used by pedestrians trying to cross the street. The hope, of course, is that the users of the flags would be more easily spotted by approaching cars, trucks, and SUVs.

On the front of each bucket (there is one on each side of the street) is a sticker that contains the instructions for using the flags. Not that anyone really needs instructions on how to use them. Their usage is not a difficult concept to understand.

Over the last few years, we have had several serious or fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crashes in the Augusta-area. While the use of these flags will not prevent all future crashes, hopefully they will help at least some.
