Rounds of Heavy Rain Could Bring Flooding to Maine

Maine will begin the week with plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures before a surge of moisture brings rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

According to WMTW, Monday will remain quiet across the state, with a light afternoon breeze and highs ranging from the upper 60s and lower 70s in northern Maine to the upper 70s and lower 80s farther south.

Skies will remain mostly clear Monday night as temperatures fall into the 50s.

Conditions will begin changing Tuesday as southerly winds pull warmer and increasingly humid air into Maine. WMTW’s forecast calls for much of the day to remain dry before showers and thunderstorms develop Tuesday evening and continue overnight.

With the atmosphere carrying a significant amount of moisture, some storms could produce torrential downpours. The severe weather threat currently appears relatively low because the strongest storms are expected to arrive after the hottest part of the day.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are likely Wednesday as another disturbance moves across the state. WMTW meteorologists say some communities could receive a second round of locally heavy rain, especially in areas repeatedly hit by thunderstorms.

A few stronger storms could also bring gusty winds and small hail, but the greatest concern will be localized flooding caused by repeated downpours.

A strong cold front is expected to move through Wednesday night, bringing the unsettled weather to an end and replacing the humidity with much drier air.

According to WMTW, dew points should fall into the 40s and 50s for the remainder of the week. Temperatures will remain close to normal for late July, setting up a more comfortable finish to the week.
