How Likely Is Maine To See A White Christmas In 2022?

Unless you are big into skiing, boarding, or snowmobiling, there is a good chance that you are not a massive fan of snow.  However, I think we can all agree that there is something magical about a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day snowstorm.  Right?

Many people don't feel like it is really Christmas unless there is a decent coating of the white stuff on the ground.  As a kid who grew up in Aroostook County in the 80s and 90s I completely agree with this!

The good news is that, despite the fact that we really have not had much snowfall in most of Maine so far, we normally do have a blanket of snow on the ground by Christmas Eve.

News Center Maine is reporting that there is a 72% chance that Augusta will have snow on the ground by Christmas Eve.  There is a 74% chance for Bangor and a 60% chance for Portland.

What about getting actual snowfall ON Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?  Of course, I am not talking about us getting an all-out blizzard on Christmas Day.  Nope.  Just enough snowfall for things to look pretty on Christmas morning.

Over the past few years, Maine has not been all that lucky when it comes to seeing a Christmas Day snow event.  However, and this was kind of a rarity, Portland had a decent amount of snow on Christmas last year.  The city, and surrounding area, got 1.8" of snow on Christmas Day.  Added to the 1.2" of snow that was already on the ground, that meant there was about 3" of snow on the ground for Christmas.

What about Christmas 2022?

According to News Center Maine, based on past experience there is a 30% chance that we will see snow on Christmas Day in Augusta.  There is a 20% chance that we will see snow fall in Bangor and a 22% chance that Portland will get a noticeable amount of snow on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
