If Passed, New Maine Law Would Forgive Student Debt
According to WABI, a bill being discussed at the statehouse would forgive up to $10,000 in student debt. But, there's a catch...
To benefit from the bill, a person would have to spend five years living and working in the state.
The goal is to entice people to move to Maine (and to retain the people currently live here).
In addition to the forgiveness from the state, the bill would also reimburse Maine employers who pay their employees student loans (assuming the employee stays in Maine for five years).
The bill would be funded by a $250-million bond issue that would need to be approved by voters.
A vote on the bill is expected in the next few weeks.
