Colby College in Maine Named the Top Beer Drinking College in the USA
If your college experience was typical, there is a good chance that it involved taking some mind altering substances.
While these could come in many forms, one of the most popular is good old beer!
Beer has been with us for a long time. The first evidence of beer brewing was found in a cave in Israel and it dated back to about 11,000 BCE. A lack of beer was reportedly one of the reasons that the pilgrims decided to land in what would eventually become Massachusetts (they had originally been heading for Virginia). Some people even say that Ben Franklin once said that beer was proof that God loves us. However, most scholars agree that he was actually talking about wine, not beer.
So, yeah, beer has been around for a long time.
Because of this, it should not be a big surprise that beer drinking factors heavily into college life.
The Top Beer Drinking College in the United States
Recently, Princeton Review put out their 'Lots of Beer' list. That is a list of the top beer drinking colleges in the United States.
The Princeton Review website explains that the ranking is based on a survey of more than 170,000 students at nearly 400 colleges and universities. One of the question they were asked how much beer was drank at the school.
At the very top of the list was Waterville, Maine's Colby College.
Honestly, given what I have seen DJing the Colby Nights at local bars, this does not surprise me at all.
About Colby College
According to the Maine Memory Network, Colby College traces its Waterville roots to 1818, when classes were held in the Chaplins’ rented home.
The college grew quickly, including an early commitment to abolition, with students forming an Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. Colby graduates played significant roles in the Civil War, while the college expanded its science programs and welcomed women and Black students.

Fires, limited space, and financial struggles eventually prompted a move from the old downtown campus to Mayflower Hill. Construction began in the 1930s, with students gradually relocating. By the postwar era, Colby had established a modern campus and continued expanding academically, physically, and socially through the 20th century.
Other Schools on Princeton Review's Beer List
Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania came in 2nd place and Buncknell University in Pennsylvania came in 3rd place. The University of Wisconsin - Madison came in 4th place. The University of the South in Tennessee rounded out the top 5.
