Officials Identify Woman Who Died at Maine Jail
According to an article on the WGME website, a Maine inmate who died while in custody at the Penobscot County Jail has been identified as 39-year-old Jodi Melanson.
According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, Melanson was arrested in Bangor at about 11:50 AM on June 20 and taken to the jail.
Officials say she was screened by medical staff and completed the standard intake process, but was unable to post bail and remained in custody.
During routine inmate checks at around 9:35 PM, correctional officers found Melanson unresponsive. Jail medical staff attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead.
The Bangor Police Department responded and began an investigation. The Maine Department of Corrections and the Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner were also notified.
Authorities say there were no reported altercations involving Melanson and either staff or other inmates during her time at the jail.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing, with test results still pending.
