New Hampshire Comedian Juston McKinney Warns Followers He is Being Impersonated on Social Media
It often feels like we are being warned about a new scam every single week.
Often, these scams target individuals, but sometimes they involve businesses or celebrities.
Earlier today, we got word that one of our favorite New England comedians was dealing with scammers attempting to hijack his followers.
Juston McKinney Warns Fans About Scammers
On Tuesday, New Hampshire based comedian Juston McKinney took to Facebook to warn his followers about scammers pretending to be him.
Basically, these scammers, using a fake Juston McKinney account, would comment on the comments of Juston's fans. In the comments, they thanked the fans for their support and asked the fan to send their account a friend request.
In his Facebook video, Juston warned his fans that this account was not his account and that he would never ask his fans to send him a friend request.
What do the Juston McKinney impersonators want? Well, we are not entirely sure, but we can guess (based on past experience) that they will send their new "friends" a message telling them that they have won a prize and all they need to do is fill out a form. That form, which often asks for very personal information, provides the scammers with enough information to hijack their target's identity.
How Do You Protect Yourself From Scams On Social Media?
According to Facebook, there are some basic rules to keep in mind if you think you are dealing with a scammer on social media.
Scammers love to rush you. They’ll threaten to shut down your account or push you to act fast. Take a breath, ask questions, and think it through. Always double check what they say before clicking links or sending money. No real company is going to demand instant payment. On social media, be cautious of strangers asking for money, fake emergencies, romance requests that turn into cash grabs, and accounts with no real activity. Watch for bad spelling, odd links, and urgent login requests. A little caution can keep your account safe.
