You Need to Visit the Most Underrated Town in Maine in 2025
One of the great things about adventuring in Maine is how many cool towns there are to explore.
Some of these towns are really well known. Bar Harbor, Portland, Augusta, and Camden, for example.
Others fly under the radar.
Many of these 'under the radar' towns never really get the recognition they deserve.
Recently, Love Exploring put out their list of the most underrated town in each state.
For Maine, they chose the coastal Maine town of Stonington.
Stonington, Maine
Located in Maine's Hancock County, the seaside town is tiny. It has a population of just over 1,000 people. Initially, the town was known for its quarries (probably how it got its name), but later fishing and lobstering became major industries.
Despite the fact that the town only has about 1,000 residents, it is one of the premiere lobstering ports in the world. In 2011, just under 15,000,000 (that's FIFTEEN MILLION) pounds of lobster were offloaded at the port. The value of that lobster was about $46.3 million.
The Love Exploring entry about the town says, in part:
A bridge links the town, at the southern tip of Deer Isle, to the mainland, but you'll find it hard to tear yourself away. It's a creative spot, packed with artists' studios and dinky galleries, and there's an opera house for live music and theater too. Foodies will be satisfied – Maine lobster is a staple here and you can eat it while looking over the bay.
Highlights of the town include Sand Beach, 44 North Coffee, 27 Fathoms Waterfront Grille, and Seabreeze on the Harbor.

If you are planning a visit please keep in mind that many of the attractions and businesses are seasonal. Make sure you check their websites or give them a call before making the trip.
What Are the Other Underrated Towns in New England?
For Massachusetts, they chose Wellfleet. For New Hampshire, they chose Sugar Hill and for Vermont the choice was Grafton.
