Bonanza Steakhouse was the place to be for decades in Maine. It was popular with locals and tourists across the state. The affordable prices and great atmosphere made it a family friendly restaurant. Over time, all Maine occasions have closed, but the legacy lives on.

Founder was Hoss from the TV Show “Bonanza”

Bonanza Steakhouse was founded in 1963 by Dan Blocker from the hit TV show “Bonanza.” Blocker played Hoss Cartwright on the series that ran from 1959 to 1973. The star power was a big appeal to Mainers.

Family-Friendly Restaurant

The low prices and large portions were a big draw. Families could afford to go out to eat at Bonanza without breaking the bank.

Cafeteria-Style Dining

The cafeteria-style restaurant was loved by many. You grabbed a tray and selected your meal including steaks, sides, salads and drinks. The salad bar was a featured item.

There was something for everyone on the menu like steaks, steak tips, country-fried steak, chicken, ribs, seafood, sandwiches and other options.

Several Locations

Bonanza had several locations in Maine including Presque Isle, Augusta, Bangor, Lewiston, Oxford and South Portland. They stayed in business for many years. All but two locations closed in the late 2010s.

Last Restaurants in Maine Closed

The last Bonanza Steakhouse restaurants were in Sanford and Presque Isle. They both closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
