Maine Outdoor Destinations Excluded From September 2026 Free Day

September 2026 marks the return of a free admission day to Maine's state parks if you bring your library card.

That's right: free. Not gonna cost you a penny.

But here's the thing. Not every Maine outdoor destination is included as part of this special event. In fact, there are nine notable exceptions you should know about, including one of the state's most iconic locations.

9 Maine Outdoor Destinations Not Included in Free Admission Day September 2026

Free admission day with a Maine library card takes place Saturday, September 19, but if you're thinking, "Let's head to Acadia to take in some gorgeous sights," you're going to want to hold up.

As legendary and incredible as Acadia is, it doesn't make the list for the free day because it's a national park. Save that trip for another day. September 19 is all about state parks.

However, the famous Baxter State Park, which was recently named one of the best places for fall adventures, doesn't make the cut either. And then there's Allagash Wilderness Waterway, which is also a no-go.

The Maine Wildlife Park, owned and operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, isn't included in the free day either. You'll have to save that wildlife outing for another time.

As for some beaches, Peacock and Scarborough Beach aren't included. But don't worry, there are other beaches in the state, like Crescent Beach State Park, where you can use your library card to get in no problem.

Oh, and Swan Island is also not part of the library card free day, nor are Penobscot River Corridor and Penobscot Narrows Observatory in Prospect.

So if you had any of these planned for your free admission day, you're going to have to pivot and pick a different place.

Your Library Card Can Get You Into Maine State Parks for Free

Maine has more than 48 state parks and historic sites across the state, giving you plenty of options for the free admission day.

The Maine State Library and Maine State Parks first teamed up in 2025 and then again in April 2026 to offer Maine library card holders the chance to get into participating state parks for free.

September marks the third time the library and parks have teamed up for the event. Just show your Maine library card at the entrance, and you'll get in without paying a buck.

That means if I'm looking for an end-of-summer beach day, there's Popham Beach State Park. If I'm looking for a hike with a view, then I might as well head to Bradbury Mountain State Park. Or maybe the family wants to do some wildlife watching at Quoddy Head State Park.

Let's just say there's plenty of options for how to spend that particular day.

Oh, and just note that it goes from 9 a.m. to closing.

Yes, some places don't make the cut for free admission day with your library card, but there are so many fantastic options that do.

There are definitely some outdoor destinations that will be perfect whether you want to stroll the sandy shores, hike through the woods, or make the climb for an incredible view of the state.
