GameStop Turning Two Maine Locations into ‘Retro Stores’
GameStop is banking on the idea that what was once cool will be cool again.
There was once a long stretch of time where vinyl records seemed impossible to find. The demand wasn't there and the music format appeared to be finished. But over the last decade or so, vinyl records have made a comeback. People want to own the physical form of music and vinyl has never been more popular.
GameStop is rolling the dice that gamers are feeling the same way. With the popularity of retro gaming consoles, GameStop is hoping that video game enthusiasts are done with emulators and downloaded copies of games that expire or disappear. They're hoping gamers want to own those old school consoles and games in physical form.
What is a GameStop 'Retro Store' All About?
With that in mind, GameStop is opening dozens of 'retro stores' across the nation that will sell physical forms of older gaming consoles as well as some of the most popular games of that era. That will include the original Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System all the way up to Playstation 1, 2 and 3 as well as the original XBox.
There will also be some harder to find relics like the Sega Saturn, Nintendo GameCube and more.
Where in Maine Can I Find a 'Retro Store?
Maine will be home to two 'retro stores' to start.
12 Stephen King Drive in Augusta
12 Waterville Commons Drive in Waterville
Two New Hampshire stores are set to go retro as well in Derry and Salem.
Will the GameStop 'Retro Stores' be Permanent?
According to USA Today, GameStop hasn't decided whether these 'retro stores' will be temporary for the holiday season or a permanent fixture in the companies model. Perhaps like the games themselves, the stores will become timeless.
