Central Maine Healthcare Hit With Six Class-Action Lawsuits After Major Data Breach
If you've been a patient in the Central Maine Healthcare system, you might want to keep an eye on your credit.
According to WGME 13, six class-action lawsuits have been filed against Central Maine Healthcare, the company that runs Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, among other hospitals, after a cybersecurity incident last month that may have exposed sensitive patient information.
The lawsuits accuse the healthcare system of negligence and breach of implied contract, essentially saying CMH didn’t do enough to protect people’s personal data or notify them quickly, WGME reported.
As of now, CMH says that all of their systems have been fully restored, but they haven’t commented publicly on the lawsuits. WGME has reached out to see if they’d respond, and so far they have not.
The news station went on to explain that this case is separate from, but similar to, another cyber-related lawsuit filed earlier this year against Covenant Health, the parent company of St. Mary’s in Lewiston and St. Joseph’s in Bangor, after a different breach that happened back in the spring.
Obviously this is a developing story that we will continue to follow as more updates become available to us.
