Here in Maine, we’ve got some solid bragging rights. Sure, we’ve got the king of horror himself, Stephen King, who has been terrifying readers (and basically making them afraid of clowns, hotels, and small towns) for decades. But that’s not all—we’re also the proud home of the world’s most important treat, the whoopie pie, (well, that’s still debatable as Pennsylvania wants that status, but we’re sticking to our claim) and let’s not forget, we’re the birthplace of Earmuffs. Yes, Maine is responsible for keeping your ears warm while you pretend to enjoy winter.

But here’s something you might not know—chewing gum, that thing you pop in your mouth to freshen up before a date (or to cover up the fact that you just ate an entire lobster roll with extra garlic butter), has its origins right here in Maine. According to ChewingGumFacts.com, (yes, that’s a thing) Back in 1848, a Portland entrepreneur named John B. Curtis decided to improve on what people were chewing at the time—paraffin wax. Because nothing says "refreshing" like gnawing on candle remnants.

Curtis came up with a better idea: spruce tree resin. He refined it, packaged it up, and introduced the world to “State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum.” It was a hit, and just like that, Maine became the OG of the chewing gum industry. His little creation paved the way for all the gum we know and love today—whether you’re into classic bubblegum, cinnamon-spiced Big Red, or that one minty flavor so strong it feels like you just got slapped in the face by a snowstorm.

So, next time you’re chomping away on a stick of gum, remember: you’ve got Maine to thank for that too.

Research comes from Beer Advocate's Maine page in March of 2025.
