A Hollywood executive once allegedly suggested that Julia Roberts play Harriet Tubman in the biopic, Harriet. In a recent interview, screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard, who wrote the script 26 years ago, revealed he presented the script to a group of execs. He recalled one executive flat right out saying, “This script is fantastic. Let’s get Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman!” When someone told the exec that having Julia Roberts, a white woman, play Harriet, one of Black History's most important figures, was highly offensive and inappropriate, he responded by saying, “It [slavery] was so long ago.
