Maine Bicyclist Killed in Late-Night Crash; Driver Faces Manslaughter Charge
A Brunswick man is facing several serious charges after police say he hit and killed a bicyclist late Monday night, then fled the scene before eventually returning.
According to Brunswick Police, officers were called to Old Bath Road near the Route 1 overpass around 11:30 p.m. for reports of a crash involving a bicyclist. When first responders arrived, they found 23-year-old Silas Octavi Esquivel Perez, also of Brunswick, who had died at the scene, WGME reported.
The news station says the driver, 41-year-old Lance Lucas-Wallace, was behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck Perez. Police say Lucas-Wallace initially left the area after the crash but later came back to the scene, where officers took him into custody.
He was arrested and charged with manslaughter, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident (aggravated), and operating under the influence involving death.
WGME went on to explain that following his arrest, Lucas-Wallace was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where his bail was set at $100,000.
Police say the crash remains under investigation, and additional charges are possible as they continue to gather evidence and await toxicology results.
This marks at least the second fatal crash involving a bicyclist in Maine in recent months, prompting renewed calls from safety advocates for drivers to stay alert and share the road, especially at night, when visibility is reduced.
This is a developing story that we will continue to update as more information is provided to us.
