Maine Has A Real-Life Castle In Camden, And You Can Actually Spend the Night Inside It
When you think of castles, you probably picture somewhere in Europe, right? Well, believe it or not, there's a real-life castle sitting right along the coast of Maine, and the coolest part? You can actually spend the night inside it!
It's called The Norumbega, located in Camden, Maine, and its history is just as interesting as the building itself.
A Castle Built in the 1800s
According to The Norumbega's website, the castle was completed in 1886 by Joseph Barker Stearns, a Maine-born inventor who made his fortune after inventing the double telegraph and selling his rights to Western Union.
After traveling the world and staying in some pretty impressive estates, he decided to build his very own castle overlooking Penobscot Bay.
And he certainly didn't hold back!
You Can Actually Stay Here!
Here's what I find most interesting. This isn't just some historic building you drive by and admire.
The castle eventually became an inn and today operates as an 11-room boutique hotel.
And get this! The Norumbega says it was recognized by Travel + Leisure as one of the world's best hotels in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
So, if you've ever wanted to feel like royalty without leaving Maine, apparently Camden has you covered!
