Crime in Maine Continues Multi-Year Decline, but Domestic Violence Murders Remain a Concern

Crime in Maine has declined for the fourth year in a row, according to new statistics released by the Maine Department of Public Safety. The latest 2024 figures show the state’s overall crime rate is now 28.83 reported offenses per 1,000 residents, continuing a steady downward trend that officials say reflects both effective law-enforcement strategies and strong community involvement.

Maine has long been considered one of the safest states in the country, and the newest data reinforces that reputation. The state’s violent crime rate remains significantly lower than the national average, with fewer incidents of robbery, aggravated assault, and other serious offenses compared to many other regions.

However, despite the encouraging overall numbers, authorities say there is still cause for concern in one critical area: domestic violence.
